Synthesis of Liver Associations Recommendations for Hepatology and Liver Transplant Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic

By Dr. George Lau, Humanity and Health Medical Center Hong Kong, and Dr. John W. Ward, Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination

To help clinicians care for chronic liver disease during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Ward and Dr. George Lau of the Humanity & Health Medical Group, Hong Kong SAR, China synthesize recommendations from liver disease experts in Asia, Europe and the United States.  To limit exposures to SARS-CoV-2, clinicians are advised to implement telehealth for routine care of liver disease, reduce elective liver biopsies and other invasive procedures, and reserve hospital and doctor office visits for those needing urgent care. The experts agree on the evaluation and treatment of liver disease for patients with COVID-19.  Viral hepatitis testing and treatment is recommended for all persons without COVID-19 and for persons on treatment diagnosed with the disease.
